Walk The Walk Or Shut Up –
Vivienne Westwood A/W 2020

Vivienne Westwood is considered one of the most unconventional and outspoken fashion designers in the past half century. Her early designs helped shape the look of the then upcoming 1970's punk rock movement and later that of the new romantics. Although known as a fashion designer and innovator, she primarily considers herself an activist.

Not having lost any of her radicalism, Westwood hosted a protest in the form of a fashion presentation during London fashion Week. Followed up by a political rally in Parlement Square. Simultaneously presenting her new A/W 2020 collection and demanding the freedom of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. It seems essential for the designer to grasp every opportunity her profession offers to promote policies she believes in, and express these in all possible ways.

"My job as an activist is to demolish the narrative”

– Westwood about her position in fashion

The London gallery space in which the collection was presented had the looks of chaotic civil unrest, plastered with hand-written signs urging for change. Political iconography and texts such as “WALK THE WALK OR SHUT UP” formed the decor for a group of models dressed up in not so typical everyday protester attire. Electric hues of blue, suits of expensive fabrics and custom prints as well as her signature colorful tartans, not the garments you would like to get soiled by paint, glass and teargas. The new collection breathes vintage Westwood sophistication, eclecticism and romanticism, yet is infused with an thriving urgency for consciousness. With the use of sustainable Harris tweed, recycled polyester and denim and forest friendly hemp, the collection is created to act now.
